General Summary: A Community Service Officer (CSO) is an unarmed, uniformed security position, and is a non-sworn (civilian) member of the UMass Boston Police Department (UMBPD). With a strong emphasis on community engagement, CSOs are responsible for performing a variety of duties to assist the UMBPD with campus safety and community policing efforts. CSOs help connect students, faculty, staff, and community members. The position enforces university policies, by-laws, the student code of conduct, and performs non-criminal police-related duties such as community outreach, patrolling the campus, providing information, issuing parking tickets, conducting escorts, responding to non-criminal complaints, and building checks. CSOs do not carry firearms or have arrest powers. Essential Functions: Serve as an ambassador for UMBPD by providing friendly, helpful service and resources to the campus community. Participate in community policing efforts, including building patrols and event staffing. Act as a Campus Security Authority and Mandated Reporter under the Clery Act and Title IX. Handle emergency situations by administering first aid, summoning assistance, directing traffic, and participating in building searches. Patrol campus grounds on foot, noting unusual activities to ensure safety and security. Prepare reports on non-criminal incidents, such as fire alarms and disturbances. Unlock buildings for scheduled events and upon request. Enforce campus policies on smoking, alcohol, drugs, and traffic regulations. Monitor weather conditions and report hazards. Participate in crime prevention and safety education programs. Operate access control, alarm, and CCTV systems. Maintain radio communication with dispatch. Operate department vehicles under all conditions. Assist in security for dignitaries, crowd control, and emergency evacuations. May serve as a court witness if needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Other Functions: Perform related duties to meet departmental and university goals. Understand and comply with Title IX, Clery Act, and other federal mandates. Engage with students and contribute to their success. Behave ethically and professionally, fostering a respectful, inclusive environment. Minimum Qualifications: U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old. High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain MA driver’s license. Successful background check and drug screening. Good mental and physical condition. Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and in all weather conditions. Ability to stand long periods and perform essential job functions physically. Knowledge of security procedures, traffic control, report writing, and observation skills. Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in emergencies. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Respect for diversity and ability to handle confidential information appropriately. Background Check: Includes a mandatory standard background check package covering criminal history, education, employment, and other relevant checks. Preferred Qualifications: Some college credits or military experience preferred. Three years of experience in security services preferred. Experience in higher education security preferred.
